This game absolutely must be experienced, even if it means you only watch others get through it. Its cinematic qualities pair perfectly with a beautifully-orchestrated soundtrack (mainly from Low Roar), and you’ll learn early on what it truly means to be altruistic when it comes to helping your fellow man. The actual game is a much more nuanced affair, with one of the most heartrending narratives you’ll ever experience in a game. As Sam Porter Bridges (Norman Reedus), you’re tasked with making your way across a fractured America in a bid to reunite those scattered throughout the country, and in turn, perhaps rebuild humanity to its former glory-in a nutshell, anyway. Following a mysterious extinction event known as the Death Stranding, which brought terrifying otherworldly entities called BTs as well as rain that ages anything it touches to the world we once knew, humanity was all but wiped out. Hideo Kojima’s newest opus is a memorable, harrowing journey that’s all about making connections. October, November and December are the most precious months of the life of a gamer because most of the famous developers including EA and Ubisoft release their major titles in Q4 of the year.
But here we are, with all 40 games I found to be true standouts. It’s truly difficult to name a standout title when it comes to crowning the best games of 2019, especially when there were so many phenomenal titles vying for attention. It feels surreal that I’ve already powered through so many fantastic games like Death Stranding, Resident Evil 2, and Control this year. That said, I’ve gone through and handpicked the ones that I’m still thinking about, long after seeing the credits roll. But only some of them resonated with me to the point where I’d rank them as the best of the entire past 365 days.
I played a lot of games this year, whether for business or pleasure (though it’s always a pleasure when it comes to writing about games). The last 12 months have been jam-packed with some truly memorable games that defined their own genres, brought some beloved franchises back into the spotlight, and proved that gaming is and will always be unmatched as one of the most exciting and cutting-edge industries out there.
